The FRAC is situated in a new quarter on the outskirts of Rennes, in an open space directly opposite a monument by Aurélie Nemours.

How can the building relate to the site when two-thirds of its surface and three-quarters of its useable volume are composed of blank walls ?

The building fits in with its surroundings by the contacts it establishes between the environment, the public and the artwork.

It is organised in dynamic arrangements of masses and lines on a large scale that matches the site, and at the same time respects the autonomy of the work by Aurélie Nemours.

A long, high loggia creates a spectacular link between the interior and the exterior. From the outside, the loggia resembles an exhibition wall turned towards the public space.

Inside, the three exhibition rooms are situated on the upper floor. Their access is given by the long gallery (loggia), which is reached from the entry hall by two wide staircases. As the gallery is itself an exhibition area, one has the impression on entering the building to access without obstacle or distance to a place dedicated to the presentation of works of art.

Coming out of the inward-looking exhibition rooms, the visitor is met by the view. This contrast between introspection and openness is stimulating and takes advantage of the geographic isolation of the FRAC.
